Sport
Approach
The
sport-competition aspect of martial art is promoted as
an alternative simulation to combat, and also a way of comparing
skills. There are always going to be arguments for and against combat
sport. It is important to bear in mind each aspect of martial art
arts serves different goals; and post modern neo sport-combat is
a more civilised approach to competitive comparisons than 'the duel
to death' of the ancient gladiator era.
The
argument that sport has too many rules that restrict the abilities
of a real fighter, has somewhat missed the point. Sport-combat's
objective is a very different one to street conflict or domestic
violence or national warfare. The predominant goals of sport combat
is to permit contestants compare at high intensity and within a
controlled environment, and
to achieve recognition and it's associated benefits.
Sport-combat
is a great way of gaining initial fighting experience, a lot of
the experiences such as absorbing blows, dealing with continuous
attacks, attacking, psychophsiological controls, familiarising with
high intensity violence.......
Of
course, sport-combat does not allow some of the self-defence techniques
or brutal tactical approach but it can certainly enhance qualities
needed for self defence. Ironically, many full contact sport-combatants
are better street fighters than some of the 'so-called' self-defence
masters/fighters. There are many qualities in sport-combat that
is transferable to other arenas such as streets or any other fields.
"It
is the novices that suffer the adversity of Anger and the seasoned
fighters advocate Aggression in a competitive or hostile situation."
